The anamorphic lens design is a wide-angle lens where the horizontal and vertical axes are compressed so that objects in the central part of the field of view appear natural, meaning wide-angle and telephoto simultaneously.

Anamorphic lenses are typically used for shooting on film or in the video, but can also be used for still photography. Anamorphic optics use a non-spherical surface. The most common type uses two planispheres together with anamorphosis glass elements between them. This design creates a distorted image that must be unsqueezed in post-production.
